Bluebird Infrared Webcam Nestbox
A 2nd grade class presented a persuasive power point program to the Mt. Airy Garden Club in 2011 requesting a $1,000 Grant to install a Bluebird Webcam Nestbox! Each March, all classes at Parr's begin to observe what's happening inside the bluebird box each day. A Time Line Bulletin Board near the cafeteria keeps track of bluebird activities .
2nd Grade Insectary Garden
In 2012, all 2nd grade students participated in designing the layout, selecting native plants, raising funds for the project, planting perennials, and watering and weeding the garden. In the fall of 2013, a new class of 2nd grades studied insects that were attracted to native plants and continued to weed, collect seeds and will continue to plant to improve the habitat.
1st Grade Pollinator Garden
In 2012, all 1st grade students participated in planting a large "pollinator" garden. Students use the garden to study how insects pollinate plants and explore the garden to identify which types of plants are best at attracting insects for pollinating. They are also responsible for caring for the garden by maintaining a weekly schedule of watering and
weeding.
Kindergarten Monarch Nursery
In 2013, Kindergarten students helped to plant 4 additional Monarch nurseries. Each nursery features a different variety of milkweed to help students study which type is preferred by the species. Students maintain the nurseries by weeding, watering, and planting new milkweed as needed. The nurseries also serve as outdoor classrooms for students to observe Monarch eggs, caterpillars, and butterflies in their natural habitat.
School-Wide Recycling
All students in all classrooms participate in classroom recycling and empty classroom recycle bins into a large bin once a week. In the cafeteria, students separate trash and items that can be recycled. Weather permitting, students collect fruit and vegetable scraps and take them to the compost bin in the Bay-Wise Butterfly Garden. Glue sticks and ink cartridges are recycled as fundraisers.
